HALCEA Education Series: Ethical Communication in Lactation
Abstract: International Board Certified Lactation Consultants have a responsibility to promote infant and parental well-being while navigating complex ethical considerations. As public health messaging, social norms, and clinical practices evolve, ethical lactation support requires careful attention to communication, autonomy, and equity. This presentation will review the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice in the context of contemporary lactation care across a variety of settings. Participants will explore strategies to foster shared decision-making, reduce harm, and promote equitable access to informed feeding support. A range of ethical challenges encountered in clinical practice will be considered, with an emphasis on the role of the health professional in navigating these situations with sensitivity and respect. Topics will include value-neutral language, the clinician’s role in supporting combination feeding, and considerations for care that honors a range of identities and experiences. Attendees will gain tools to ethically navigate lactation promotion and support in ways that uphold family autonomy and well-being.
