HALCEA Education Series: Optimizing Outcomes - Lactation Support for the Almost-Term Infant

Abstract: Late preterm and early term infants face unique challenges that can hinder breastfeeding success, including physiological immaturity, feeding difficulties, and higher readmission rates. This presentation outlines key barriers such as weak suck, sleepiness, and delayed milk production, and offers evidence-based strategies for lactation consultants to support breastfeeding. Emphasis is placed on early intervention, caregiver education, and tailored lactation management to improve outcomes for this vulnerable population.
